Every year from June 1 to 7, the United Kingdom observes National CPR and AED Awareness Week. During this time, we highlight how lives can be saved when more people know how to perform CPR and use an AED. Here are some key points relevant to the UK:
Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrests Happen Everywhere:
Approximately 70% of cardiac arrests occur outside of hospitals, including homes, public places, and workplaces.
Bystanders play a crucial role in providing immediate assistance until professional help arrives.
Be Prepared to Save a Loved One’s Life:
Imagine if it were your family member or friend experiencing cardiac arrest. Would you know what to do?
Learning CPR and AED skills can make a significant difference in the UK context.
Hands-Only CPR:
If you witness a teen or adult suddenly collapse, follow these two simple steps:
Call 999: Get professional help on the way.
Push Hard and Fast in the Center of the Chest: Use the rhythm of the song “Stayin’ Alive” (about 100-120 compressions per minute).
AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators):
AEDs are portable devices that deliver an electric shock to restore a normal heart rhythm during sudden cardiac arrest.
They are widely available in public places, including shopping centers, train stations, and airports.
If an AED is nearby, don’t hesitate to use it!
Get Involved in Your Community:
Celebrate CPR and AED Awareness Week by spreading awareness in the UK.
Share educational materials, participate in training sessions, and encourage others to learn these life-saving skills.
Remember, every second counts during a cardiac emergency. By knowing CPR and how to use an AED, you can be the difference between life and loss. Let’s save lives together!
