Ticks are small arachnids that feed on the blood of animals and humans. While they are commonly associated with Lyme disease, they can transmit other diseases as well. Here are some key points about ticks:
Lyme Disease: Lyme disease is the most well-known tick-borne illness. It’s caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, transmitted through the bite of infected black-legged ticks (Ixodes scapularis or Ixodes pacificus).
Other Tick-Borne Diseases: Besides Lyme disease, ticks can transmit diseases like anaplasmosis, babesiosis, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever
Prevention:
Tick Checks: After spending time outdoors, thoroughly check your body for ticks. Pay attention to hidden areas like the scalp, behind the ears, and under clothing.
Protective Clothing: Wear long sleeves, pants, and closed-toe shoes when in tick-prone areas.
Tick Repellents: Use insect repellents containing DEET or picaridin.
Avoid High Grass and Brush: Ticks often reside in tall grass and shrubs.
Pet Protection: Regularly check your pets for ticks and use tick preventatives recommended by your veterinarian.
